Day 1: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park& Afternoon Boat Cruise
Your adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel or residence in Kampala or Entebbe by a representative from Heuvel Explorer Safaris. We will depart early in a shared 4x4 safari vehicle for the scenic drive to Lake Mburo National Park located in western Uganda. The journey typically takes around 4-5 hours, with an exciting and picturesque stop exactly at the Equator crossing line in Kayabwe where you can take photos and witness a water experiment demonstrating the earth's hemispheres.
Upon arrival at the park and checking into your budget-friendly lodge (e.g. Eagles Nest Lake Mburo or Hyena Hill lodge You will have lunch. In the afternoon, you will head to the lake for a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Mburo This activity offers excellent opportunities to see a variety of aquatic life, including large populations of hippos and crocodiles. The lake's shores are also rich with bird species, such as African fish eagles, pelicans, and the rare shoebill stork. The evening will be spent at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After an early breakfast, you will embark on a morning game drive through the open savannas of Lake Mburo. This park is unique for its populations of plains game not found elsewhere in southern Uganda, such as zebras, impalas (from which Kampala city derived its name), elands, topis, and buffalos. The low density of trees offers clear views for photography and wildlife spotting. This activity provides a different perspective of the park's diverse ecosystem. Following the morning game drive while moving out of the park, you will begin the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park The drive is long, about 6-7 hours, taking you through the stunning Kigezi highlands, often referred to as the "Switzerland of Africa" due to the terraced hills. A lunch stop will be made en-route in Mbarara town. You will arrive at your budget accommodation in the Bwindi area (e.g. Buhoma Community Rest Camp or Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge depending on your trekking sector) in the evening, ready to rest before the next day's main activity.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience & Batwa Cultural Tour
This is the highlight of your safari. You will have an early breakfast and carry a packed lunch provided by the lodge. Your driver will transfer you to the park headquarters for a mandatory pre-trekking briefing at 8:00 am. Here, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers will educate you on the rules and etiquette of gorilla trekking, after which you will be divided into groups of eight people per gorilla family. Led by experienced ranger guides, you will enter the dense forest to search for the magnificent mountain gorillas. The trek can be physically demanding and may take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you are allowed a magical one hour to observe and photograph these gentle giants in their natural habitat, watching them feed, play, and interact.
After the trek, you will return to the lodge for a rest. In the late afternoon, you will participate in the Batwa Cultural Experience. This guided walk, often led by the Batwa people themselves (the "keepers of the forest" or pygmies who were the forest's original inhabitants), takes you through their traditional way of life. You will learn about their hunting techniques using bows and arrows, how they gather honey, make fire from sticks, identify medicinal plants, and build temporary shelters from forest materials. The experience concludes with traditional music, dance performances, and storytelling, providing valuable insight into their rich but fading culture. Your participation directly supports the community's livelihood and cultural preservation efforts.
Day 4: Return to Kampala Entebbe
After a hearty breakfast, you will check out from your lodge and start the long return journey to Kampala or Entebbe for your departure flight or hotel stay. The drive will offer a final chance to soak in the rural Ugandan landscape. A stop will be made at the Mpambire royal drum makers' craft market, where you can observe traditional drum-making and purchase souvenirs. You will arrive in Kampala/Entebbe in the late afternoon or early evening, marking the end of your memorable adventure with Heuvel Explorer Safaris
