DID YOU KNOW...? The Spotted Hyena: Not Just a Scavenger

The spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is one of Africa's most misunderstood predators. Its reputation as a cowardly scavenger is a long-standing myth that has been debunked by decades of scientific research. Here are some fascinating facts that reveal the true nature of this remarkable animal.

Detailed Facts and Explanations:

  • Accomplished Hunters: While they are opportunistic and will readily scavenge, spotted hyenas are in fact highly skilled and cooperative hunters. Studies have shown that hyenas can hunt and kill up to 75% of their own food.4 They rely on their incredible stamina and speed to chase down prey, often running at speeds of up to 60 km/h and maintaining a swift pace for several kilometers to exhaust their target.5 This makes them less like a stealthy cat and more like a tenacious wolf.

  • Unmatched Jaw Power: The spotted hyena possesses one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom.6 Their massive jaws and powerful premolars can generate immense pressure, allowing them to crush and digest the bones of their prey. This unique adaptation gives them an ecological advantage, as they can consume parts of a carcass that other predators leave behind, acting as the "cleanup crew" of the ecosystem.

  • Matriarchal Society: Hyena clans are matriarchal, meaning they are led by a dominant female. Females are larger, more aggressive, and socially dominant over males. This is a rare trait among mammals. The alpha female's high rank ensures she and her cubs have first access to food, which is crucial for the survival and health of the next generation. This social structure is complex and involves intricate hierarchies and communication through a variety of vocalizations, including the famous "laugh," which is actually a sign of distress or excitement.

  • The Pseudopenis: Female spotted hyenas have a unique and often-talked-about physical characteristic: an elongated clitoris that resembles a penis (a pseudopenis). This makes it difficult to distinguish between males and females without close observation and is a testament to the powerful hormones that govern their social structure.

Where to Find Hyenas in Uganda

Uganda is home to a healthy population of spotted hyenas, and they can be found in several of the country's savannah national parks. While they are mostly nocturnal, you can increase your chances of spotting them by embarking on a night game drive or a very early morning drive.

  • Queen Elizabeth National Park: This is one of the best places in Uganda to see hyenas, particularly in the open plains of the Kasenyi sector.16 The high prey density and mix of habitats make it an ideal environment for them.

  • Murchison Falls National Park: As Uganda's largest national park, Murchison Falls offers vast savannah landscapes where hyenas thrive.17 They can be found in the northern sector of the park, along the Buligi game tracks.

  • Kidepo Valley National Park: Located in the remote northeast of Uganda, Kidepo is an excellent destination for spotting hyenas. The park's untouched wilderness and limited visitor numbers mean the animals are often less habituated and more active.

  • Lake Mburo National Park: Although smaller, this park is also home to hyenas. Night game drives here provide a great opportunity to see them and other nocturnal animals.
